Malta, officially known as the Republic of Malta, is a Southern European island country consisting of an archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. It has a population of 417,520.

The country's S3 priorities in the area of health have a focus on healthy living and active ageing, and e-health. In Malta the life sciences sector has a wide ranging presence in the Maltese economy, with well established operations in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, the production of software for the healthcare industry, as well as a growing health tourism sector. All this has been boosted by the country’s workforce as well as effective connectivity with foreign markets.

Healthprofile according to the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD):

Malta’s population enjoys generally good health and one of the longest life expectancies in the EU. Nevertheless, high obesity rates among adults and adolescents pose a serious threat to public health. The National Health Service provides universal coverage for a comprehensive benefit package, while the private sector plays a key role in the delivery of primary care. Strengthening primary care to improve efficiency and better serve those living with chronic conditions is an important policy goal.
